Letter From Editor

Dear Readers

Beyond the applications themselves, telecommunications are of vital importance for a number of reasons. On the economic and technological front, industry needs to keep pace with fast-evolving technologies and customer needs in today's highly competitive marketplace. Although communication, multimedia and data technologies tend to converge and complement each other, having a variety of available systems able to fulfil the same need encourages users to select the best solution in terms of performance and price.
Today, with over 100 satellites in orbit, telecommunications is the largest sector in the space industry. And since it is the only profitable commercial space activity, it has obviously attracted international competition. Satellite telecommunications are also of strategic importance, which explains why the military is the sector's biggest customer. Dedicated satellites provide armed forces with specific jam-resistant channels enabling them to communicate in real time and in total secrecy with theatres of operations.
On the cultural and political front, telecommunications are playing a vital role in disseminating information worldwide. There are marked disparities, however, in the availability and use of new technologies between regions. Because they can cover such large areas, satellite-based technologies aim to redress these imbalances and open up remote and deprived areas.

                                            Bye
